About The Material These Picks Are Made From:
Plectrums made from stone have been used traditionally throughout the world since the dawn of stringed instruments millennia ago. Carnelian is semiprecious gemstone that is a reddish-orange form of chalcedony, which is comprised of quartz and moganite crystal. Carnelian can be anywhere from completely transparent, to nearly fully opaque, with most being somewhere in between. The color of Carnelian can vary greatly, and it can range from a pale orange, to various shades of brown, to almost black, but most commonly Carnelian has a caramel like hue to it. Carnelian is sometimes called sard and vice versa. Strictly speaking they are not the same mineral, and have slightly varied compositions. However, the differences are minimal, not well defined, and the names are often used interchangeably. Sard tends to be somewhat harder and darker, while Carnelian is generally on the lighter side.
Carnelian has been used by humans since ancient times, and has been valued for its aesthetic qualities as well as its healing and metaphysical properties for thousands of years. Ancient Rome, ancient Egypt, the Assyrians, Minoans, and many other civilizations all prized it for use in beads, amulets, rings, engraved gems, and other ornaments. The uses and meaning varied over time and across cultures. The ancient Romans, Assyrians, and Egyptians all used Carnelian to make wax seals as hot wax does not stick to Carnelian.
Carnelian is a hard and durable stone, with a 6.5-7 rating on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it a fantastic and long lasting material for use in guitar picks.
